Pumpkin Patch 2010

In October of 2009, after being home with Nicholas for about 6 months, we took him to the Flower Mound Pumpkin Patch. We didn't stay very long because there was SO MUCH to see and do....it was overwhelming... Fast forward to early September of 2010, when Nicholas began asking us nearly everyday to take him to the Pumpkin Patch. We kept telling him we had to wait until they opened in October. A few days into October we took him back to the Pumpkin Patch in Flower Mound, TX.....

Nicholas was SO excited to finally get back to the Patch!

Who dares to cross under the nether regions of the mighty scare crow??

SO MANY PUMPKINS TO CHOOSE FROM.....He can barely contain himself.

Nicholas played with practically every pumpkin we
permitted him to place his paws upon.

This year we were able to go on a hay ride....a first for both Daddy and Nicholas. Here is a picture during the ride. (No Aronins are pictured)

Here is our driver. His name is Buford T. Huffnaegle III,
but most people just call him "Murray."

Nicholas with a fist full of hay....wasn't that a John Wayne movie??

When it was time to leave Nicholas wanted to stay and go again!

Pumpkins!

You can't really have a Pumpkin Patch these days without an array of gigantic bounce houses and inflatable slides. This is the slide that Daddy had to go on with Nicholas last year. I was prepared to take the plunge again this year, but Nicholas did an excellent job all on his own!

I am always so grateful when other kids allow Nicholas the little extra time
he needs without trying to race past him

Made it to the top! Time to slide....

WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

He had so much fun he did it three more times!!

Here he is playing in a small house loaded with 17 screaming kids!! How do I know it was 17? Because I had to go in there and 'persuade' him to come out...

Nicholas loved sitting and becoming one with the pumpkins.
(while looking for bugs of course!)

One of many wonderful pictures taken by Lisa....

Just a couple of dudes hanging out in a giant pumpkin....

Just a close up of a couple of dudes hanging out in a giant pumpkin....

Here are my three favorite shots captured by Lisa....

TWO

THREE
Great shots by my Special Honeybear of Love and Goodness!!

We couldn't get the automatic picture taking thingy to work so we took turns to get
these last two shots before leaving the friendly confines of the Pumpkin Patch
and hitting Jersey Mike's for lunch.

Two of my most favorite people of all time!

A Guitar, Two Dogs and A Spider

We recently spent a lovely rainy afternoon at our friends house (Ray, Laura and Joshah) where Nicholas had a grand time. There were some other adults there, plus three kids and three dogs...two GIANT dogs that didn't mind Nicholas playing with them. There was also a guitar for him to "play."

Maybe he'll play the steel guitar one day??

Nicholas, as well as the other kids, spent a lot of time in Joshah's room where he loved climbing in and out of the dog kennel. At one point, there were three kids inside(all older than Nicholas) and Nicholas tried to get in as well....it was quite a sight.

Here he is trying to get every stuffed animal possible in there, along with himself.

That's enough of that...time to get out and get another one of Mommy's cookies!

The two big puppies are Shadow (black) and Pablo. They are cousins! They are both Labradoodles and love to play, especially with kids.

Nicholas had previously met Shadow and was talking about him about a week before we went out there.....we had no idea Pablo was going to be there...both dogs were very sweet.

Nicholas was laughing out loud as he watched the two puppies wrestle each other.

Here he is practicing for Halloween. When we ask him what a Pirate says, he responds "Arrrr matey." Sadly the patch could not be found when we were getting his costume on.....more pictures to follow!

Each year our adoption agency has a picnic held in Dallas. This year, you guessed it, they had face painter. Our bug loving boy wanted a spider on his forehead...more bug stories later!

Letters, A Birthday Party, First Horse Ride...and....A New Bed!

We recently found out from Nicholas' teacher that he can now identify 15 letters....that's more than halfway to 26!! He shall be blogging away in no time.

Tomorrow (Oct 6th) is our first Parent-Teacher conference. Since he started school in January of this year, we did not get to have a PTC last year. This semester he is at a new school with three new teachers. According to his daily folder, he is doing well...a green mark everyday!! As a result of his new school and teachers, he has been talking A LOT more lately. He still will get frustrated when he has trouble expressing himself and will say, "Can't say it," when he gets stuck or 'thinks' he is stuck. We just tell him to start talking and we will help him. That usually gets him talking again.

Have we mentioned that Nicholas really likes bugs? Well he does. He loves to look for them, touch them and play with them regardless of their vital sign levels. He recently pointed out a squashed cricket at the entrance of our local supermarket and even tried to pick it up! Through his fascination with bugs, he is learning many important concepts....Here are a few: Some bugs are good and some bugs are bad and can hurt you. Some bugs are alive and some bugs are dead. If you 'play with' a bug too roughly it will stop moving. Mommy is unable to reanimate bugs that have gone on to meet their makers.

Last weekend we attended the 3rd birthday party of our neighbor Jack. It was at a nearby park and was thankfully not too hot to be outside. There was a large playground and even a small pond with ducks! Fun was had by all...

This past summer Lisa filled out an application (a giant one that needed signatures from Doctors and Teachers) for Nicholas to attend a wonderful local place for kids with special needs called Spirit Horse.

After a few months went by we did not think we would hear from them...but then they called last week and said Nicholas had been accepted and his first day would be Tuesday, October 5th...which was actually today! That's right, today Nicholas got to ride a horse for the first time. Some pictures are below...

But before the pictures...one more update!

Even though he didn't ask for permission, Nicholas has been growing a lot lately....so much so, we thought it was time for a new bed. His toddler bed served him well for the past year and half, but we felt it was time for an upgrade. We then went to Rooms To Go Kids in Grapevine, TX to find a new bed. The moment we walked in, the salesman who greeted us noticed Nicholas was wearing braces on his legs. He immediately tapped his left leg with his cane and showed us that he too was wearing a brace on his leg....quite a coincidence eh?? Just like the time last summer when we went to buy our mini-van and our salesman was named Sergei and was from Ukraine.....or the time we went to Best Buy before our trip to Ukraine to buy a new camera and the saleswoman was from, you guessed it.....Ukraine!

All part of the "Big Guy's" plan....

Anyhow, about an hour later we picked out a bed and started to leave to go have lunch. Well somebody was very upset that we were not able to bring the bed home with us at that very moment....he cried and cried and cried....."Want big bed" "Miss big bed" "Take it home" "Bed, bed, bed, bed, bed, bed" This is what we heard from the back seat all the way to Jersey Mike's.
The bed was going to be delivered on Monday, but it was only Saturday! We tried to explain having to wait a couple of days and how he had to be patient.....hard concepts for a 4 year old....but he made it and Monday night got to sleep in his big new bed....

And now for the pictures!

The ducks at the birthday party have finally spotted the potato chip crumbs that we have been throwing in their general direction.

Slowly they make their way towards the buffet of chips!

Our wacky crazy super zoom feature!!

These ducks have obviously done this before...

Nicholas sat with Mommy and watched them chow down on Classic Lays potato chips...

Moments after this shot was taken, Nicholas tried to grab a duck to take it home with us.....but the ducks were just too fast.....this time....

Before arriving at the party, Nicholas could be heard from the back seat saying, "Go party, eat cake....cake in tummy, mmmmmmmmmm."

Our neighbors with their birthday boy who decided to start on the cupcakes before anyone else...notice his frosting covered lips!

Nicholas getting cleaned up after cupcake number one....well actually he only ate half of it...the half with the frosting, of course.

The second cupcake half is nearly gone!

Eating cupcakes can make a guy thirsty!

After cupcakes it was time to play! Here he is on the swings...

These photos were taken today! Besides getting to ride a horse, this program is also going to teach Nicholas how to get things ready before the ride, how to brush and feed the horse and how to put things away after the ride is over....Here he is getting his saddle with his instructor, Kelly.

Learning how to brush the horse just right....

Ready to go for his first ride!!

Taking his horse back to the stable. By the way his horse is named Eyore. They believe he is a combination Appaloosa and Zebra...

On the top level of his new bed!

Checking out where he will be sleeping each night. Right now our agreement is that he may only be on the top bed during the daytime and must sleep on the bottom at night....so far so good!

We really liked this bed because it has a staircase instead of a ladder. Nicholas had no trouble getting up the ladder, but coming down was a different story! These steps not only allow him to get up and down easily, but each step also has a drawer....totally cool....

New Outfits and New Traditions

Last year I received a #43 Troy Polamalu Pittsburgh Steelers jersey (the guy in the head and shoulder's commercial with ALL that hair)......Last weekend while shopping at my favorite store, Kohl's, ( I really should not be allowed in there!) Lisa spotted a miniature version of the very same jersey AND it was on sale!! Here we are modeling our new jerseys....please notice how our puppy Sabian is posing right along with us!

Down the runway....

On our way back...

Here is how Nicholas looked one day last week when I came home from work....
Lisa said, "Nicholas, tell Daddy what you had at school today that is all over your shirt." Nicholas thought for a moment, looked at his shirt and then yelled, "PUDDING!" Although his shirt tells a different story....his teacher assured us that he did indeed eat "most" of his pudding.

A few weeks ago Lisa started a tradition for Sunday night dinner...Each Sunday we give Nicholas his bath, put him in his pajamas and then Lisa makes pancakes (gluten free!) for dinner. Nicholas still goes back forth calling them either, "cupcakes" or "pancakes." We also had him say to Lisa a couple of weeks ago, as well as tonight, "Thank you Mommy for making cupcakes." So for a while, Sunday nights will be known as, "Cupcakes In Pajamas" night....feel free to stop by...just don't forget to wear your pajamas and to bring your own syrup!

Random Thoughts, Updates and Pictures Too

If it was up to me, Nicholas Alexander Aronin would have been named, "Hipster Boyleg." True story!

On most days when Lisa picks up Nicholas from school, as soon as he sees her he will run to her yelling, "Mommy, Mommy, Mommy!"

Average number of times we tell Nicholas he is cute each day..........27

Nicholas has a hamster in his classroom this year and his name is the same as both the bus driver on The Simpson's and the middle name of the original bass player for Jonnie Blanco.......

Otto

*****So sorry about this......the hamster is actually named Otis.....oops!!

When we go to the store to "look at machines" Nicholas tries to put toys into our basket while saying, "Need this one....take it home....buy it." This almost never works.....on an unrelated note....did I mention how flippin cute he is??

Today, during bath time, I decided to pick up some of Nicholas' bath toys that are shaped like numbers......I am always trying to get in those "teachable moments." The first number I picked up and showed to him he immediately said, "EIGHT." I couldn't believe it....he also knew 3, 4, 5 and 6. The combination of school and Lisa being a stay at home Mom, is really paying off....woo-hoo!!

This message is JUST for Nicholas.........."Hey little boy! Mommy and Daddy love you so very much. We were so blessed when we were able to adopt you nearly a year and a half ago. We are enjoying being able to watch you grow each month, week and day. We are so amazed with all the things you have learned in such a short time! You are our amazing little boy and we love you lots!"

When we were visiting Nicholas at his Orphanage in Ukraine, we were always afraid to let him get dirty while were outside. We did not want the "nannies" to get mad at us or at him. Even though he couldn't understand us at the time, we told him each day...."When we get home you can play outside all the time and get as dirty as you want to because that's what little boys do!"

We recently went to a small zoo just north of our house...the name escapes me right now... Here are Nicholas and his pal Kelsey trying to see a giant turtle.

"So like these two potatoes are so huge that they could totally touch anything in the universe...except themselves....."

Nothing beats standing around in the kitchen wearing a t-shirt, some shorts and two oven-mitts.
